Holmstrom scores twice, Red Wings beat Coyotes 4-1

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Tomas Holmstrom deflected two of Nicklas Lidstrom’s shots into the net for his 14th and 15th goals to help the Detroit Red Wings beat the Phoenix Coyotes 4-1 on Saturday night.

Pavel Datsyuk added a power-play goal, and Darren Helm had an empty-netter for the Red Wings, who opened a five-game trip with their second straight win.

The Coyotes had a two-man advantage when Matthew Lombardi scored their lone goal.

Phoenix lost at home in regulation for the first time since Nov. 16, a span of 12 games, in front of a crowd announced as a sellout of 17,125.

The Coyotes lost their second in a row at home after their franchise-record 10-game winning streak there ended in a 3-2 shootout loss to San Jose on Thursday night.

It was the first sellout since the home opener for the Coyotes, owned by the NHL after a bitter bankruptcy battle.

Jimmy Howard had 35 saves for the Red Wings, who have eight players out with injuries.

Detroit scored first, seconds after their power play try ended, on a penalty against Shane Doan for roughing.

Holmstrom, who had settled right in front of the net, deflected Lidstrom’s straightaway shot past goalie Ilya Bryzgalov with 5:16 left in the third period. Brain Rafalski had the first of his two assists on the play.

Phoenix tied it at 1 with a 5-on-3 advantage, Matthew Lombardi knocking it in on a nice pass across the crease from Robert Lang 4:57 into the seecond period. It was Lombardi’s ninth goal of the season. Keith Yandle got the other assist on the play.

Detroit’s Brett Ledba (slashing) and Darren Helm (roughing) were in the penalty box when the Coyotes scored.

The Lidstrom-Holmstrom combination struck again with just 18.6 seconds left in the second period. Lidstrom’s long shot from just in front of the blue line was deflected by Holmstrom in the crease again and it was 2-1 Detroit entering the third.

Moments earlier, Pavel Datsyuk had a breakaway attempt foiled when Bryzgalov caught the puck with his glove.

Doan was in the penalty box for interference when Datsyuk scored his 10th goal of the season on a left wrister with 14:09 left in the third period to make it 3-1. Todd Bertuzzi and Rafalski got the assists on the goal.
