Britain beats Kazakhstan at Hopman Cup
PERTH, Australia — Andy Murray won his singles match and teamed with 15-year-old Laura Robson in a mixed doubles victory to give Britain a 2-1 win over Kazakhstan at the Hopman Cup.
Murray and Robson beat Andrey Golubev and Yaroslava Shvedova 6-3, 5-7 and 12-10 in the match tiebreaker Monday.
Earlier, Murray defeated Golubev 6-2, 6-2 in singles after Shvedova topped Robson 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 to put Kazakhstan ahead 1-0.
“It was a long day, but a good result all round,” Murray said.
Murray, who starts the year fourth in the men’s rankings, won his singles match when Golubev double-faulted on match point.
“I thought I played really well, it felt good,” Murray added. “I thought I was picking the ball up really well, which you can’t always say in the first match of a new year.”
Earlier, Igor Andreev and Elena Dementieva beat Sabine Lisicki and Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-4, 7-6 (7) in the deciding mixed doubles to give Russia a 2-1 victory over Germany.
Andreev beat Kohlschreiber 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-3 in the singles to level the match after Lisicki had earlier defeated Dementieva 6-4, 6-1.
The U.S. takes on Australia and Spain plays Romania on Tuesday. Britain plays Germany and Russia plays Kazakhstan on Wednesday.
