Grevers, Hoff take high-point awards in Long Beach

LONG BEACH, Calif. — Former Olympians Matt Grevers and Katie Hoff won the top overall awards at the Southern California Grand Prix, while Michael Phelps won the 100-yard butterfly Monday night.

Three meet records were broken as the Grand Prix wrapped up with Phelps winning three of his five events. Phelps handily beat Japan’s Masayuki Kishida in 45.68 seconds in the fly.

Long Beach’s Jessica Hardy set the meet record with 58.99 seconds in the 100-yard breaststroke, barely beating Rebecca Soni (59.00).

Ariana Kukors later set a meet record in the 200-yard individual medley, finishing in 1 minute, 55.05 seconds. Dana Vollmer, who held off Hoff to win the 200-yard freestyle Sunday night, finished third behind Hoff in the IM, but won the 100-yard butterfly in 51.42.

Margaret Hoelzer earned her first victory of the meet with a 52.97 in the 100-yard backstroke.

Japanese Olympic gold medalist Kosuke Kitajima set a meet record in the 100-yard breaststroke in 52.17, beating American Mike Alexandrov. Japan’s Hidemasa Sano won the 200-yard IM in 1:43.79, holding off Austria’s Markus Rogan (1:45.69) and Florida’s Robert Margalis (1:47.40).

Chloe Sutton won the women’s 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:10.85, while Zane Grothe (Boulder City, Nev.) won the men’s version in 15:11.89.

Grevers, a two-time Olympic relay champion, won five gold medals in Long Beach, adding the 100-yard backstroke Monday night with a winning time of 45.97. Hoff had the women’s highest point total over the four-day event.

Long Beach was the second stop of the eight-meet USA Swimming Grand Prix, which continues in Columbia, Mo., on Feb. 12-15. Sutton leads with 31 points, while Grevers and Soni are tied for second with 26 points apiece.
