Federer beats Tsonga to make Australian Open final
MELBOURNE, Australia — Roger Federer has beaten Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to set up an Australian Open final against Britain’s Andy Murray.
Federer reached his 22nd final at a Grand Slam tournament, extending his all-time record, with the 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 win on Friday night.
The 28-year-old Swiss has won the Australian title three times among his record 15 major singles titles.
Federer lost the 2009 final here in five sets to Rafael Nadal, giving the Spaniard his first major title on hardcourts. On Sunday, Federer will be appearing in his 18th final in the last 19 Grand Slams — his semifinal loss here to Novak Djokovic in 2008 being the only break in the sequence.
