Finchem says he should have briefed players

MARANA, Ariz. — PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem is taking the blame for not alerting players ahead of time why Tiger Woods chose to make his first public appearance during the Match Play Championship.

Ernie Els was among the most outspoken, telling Golfweek magazine that “it’s selfish” for Woods to take attention away from golf.

Finchem says he should have told players before their matches Wednesday what was going on and to expect questions about Woods, who had gone silent for three months until Friday.

He said Sunday during the Match Play final: “It’s just a screw-up on my part.”
