S Dakota joins other states in sanctioning soccer

PIERRE, S.D. — South Dakota has become the final state to add soccer as a sanctioned high school sport.

The state High School Activities Association board voted 8-0 Wednesday to accept a report on how to implement the sport and 5-3 on adding it beginning in the 2012-13 school year.

A number of South Dakota schools have club teams that pay their own expenses. Some schools have been reluctant to have soccer teams because of the costs. Local school boards will have the final decision on whether to offer soccer at individual schools.
