US women’s soccer to play Germany in Cleveland
CHICAGO — The U.S. women’s soccer team will play world champion Germany in an exhibition at Cleveland Browns Stadium.
The U.S. Soccer Federation announced Wednesday the match will be played on May 22.
The game will be the first for the German team in the U.S since winning the 2003 World Cup. In their last meeting, the U.S. won 3-2 on March 3 in the final of the Algarve Cup in Faro, Portugal.
The top-ranked Americans hold an 18-4-4 advantage in head-to-head meetings against Germany and West Germany, winning in the semifinals of the 1991 World Cup and quarterfinals of the 1999 World Cup. The U.S. lost in the semifinals of the 2003 World Cup.
Germany is ranked second.
The only previous match in Cleveland for the U.S. women was a 2-0 win over China on June 16, 2007.
