Hernandez strikes out seven for Mariners

GOODYEAR, Ariz. — Felix Hernandez struck out seven over five innings in a Seattle Mariners split squad’s 3-1 loss to the Cleveland Indians on Thursday.

Hernandez allowed three hits, four walks and two runs — one earned — in his third outing. The Mariners have carefully handled their 23-year-old ace after signing him to a five-year, $78 million contract extension in January.

Cliff Lee, acquired in a December deal to join “King Felix,” has an abdominal strain. He threw lightly for five minutes Thursday morning and felt pain. Bedard is out until at least June following shoulder surgery.

Indians starter David Huff gave up five hits and one run — a homer by Jack Wilson — over 4 1-3 innings. The left-hander walked three, including two when he loaded the bases in the fourth.
