Haryana launches sports scholarship programme

CHANDIGARH - The Haryana Olympic Association has started a noble scheme of awarding scholarship to sportspersons.

The scheme under tghe Haryana Sports Talent Hunt programme is aimed at encouraging sportspersons and creating a web-based database of high-potential players in a format containing relevant information.

“The Haryana Olympic Association will fully assist the programme in which a scholarship of Rs.18,000 would be given to first 1000 players in the age group of 8-14 years. Similarly, the first 1000 players in the age group of 14-19 years would get Rs.30,000,” said O.P. Singh, director sports and youth affairs, here Tuesday.

“The project will be an annual affair and will cost Rs.six crore. In the coming years we would certainly widen its scope,” he added.

The players will be selected through the Sports and Physical Aptitude Test (SPAT).

SPAT would be held in seven disciplines, 30 meter flying, 6×10 shuttle race, forward bend and reach, standing broad jump, vertical jump, medicine ball and 800 meter race.

More than 70,000 applicants between the age group of 8 to 19 years will appear in test commencing from April 15 at Bhiwani, Rohtak, Gurgaon and Panchkula.
