KENTUCKY (GaeaTimes.com)- The festive mood in Kentucky Oaks Day was disrupted for some time yesterday as Rachel Alexandra failed to win the second straight race. She was named the 2009 Horse of the Year. The mare started the race with a lead which led the crowd to cheer and many started thinking that she will finish the race first without any issue. However, they were proved wrong as the mare was defeated by Unrivaled Belle. Everyone expected Rachel Alexandra to pull away but she became engrossed in a stretch long duel with her chief contender at the race, Unrivaled Belle. The latter won by a really narrow margin.

The defeat of Rachel Alexandra has come as a disappointment to its trainer. He said after the race that the mare performed well but she could have done better. Unrivaled Belle has been trained by Bill Mott who said that he had faith in his mare. However, he admitted that he did not expect it beat a mare of the caliber of Rachel Alexandra. The owner of Rachel Alexandra Jess Jackson ruled out the chances of making the mare retired. He said that he is happy with the mare and losing out in a few races will not change his perception about the mare.

It was in the last 100 yards of the race that Unrivaled Belle managed to edge ahead of Rachel Alexandra. It was a neck to neck fight with the viewers hoping Rachel Alexandra will reassert her position but that could not happen. The defeat came as a shocker for Rachel Alexandra’s fans.
