OEIRAS, Portugal — Alejandro Falla of Colombia beat seventh-seeded Juan Ignacio Chela 6-4, 7-6 (4) in the first round of the Estoril Open on Monday.
Chela took a 4-2 lead in the first set before Falla broke back twice against the 2004 champion. Falla then wasted a 4-2 lead in the second as Chela was able to force the tiebreaker.
Top-ranked Roger Federer has a bye into the second round of the clay-court tournament.
In the women’s event, Julia Goerges of Germany had little trouble in routing third-seeded Canadian Aleksandra Wozniak 6-1, 6-1.
