Australia’s Matthew Goss wins 9th stage of Giro; Kazakhstan’s Alexandre Vinokourov keeps lead

Goss wins 9th stage of Giro d’Italia
CAVA DE TIRRENI, Italy — Matthew Goss of Australia has won the ninth stage of the Giro d’Italia in a sprint finish and Alexandre Vinokourov of Kazakhstan has kept the overall lead.
Goss rides for the HTC-Columbia team. He covered the mostly flat 116-mile leg from Frosinone to Cava De’ Tirreni in 4 hours, 8 minutes, 17 seconds on Monday. Filippo Pozzato of Italy was second and Tyler Farrar of the United States was third.
Vinokourov maintained a 72-second lead over Cadel Evans of Australia in the overall standings.
Tuesday’s 10th stage in southern Italy is a rolling 143-mile route from Avellino to Bitonto.
