FIFA extends trials with 5 game officials

ZURICH — FIFA will extend its experiment in using an extra game official behind each goal. The test, however, won’t be used at the World Cup.

Soccer’s governing organization decided Tuesday to run trials for two more years. It also told national soccer bodies they are free to run experiments in their domestic leagues.

The game is traditionally run by a referee and two assistants along the sidelines.

The rules-making panel also said that players who feint at striking the ball after finishing their run to the ball on a penalty kick will get a yellow card and the kick will be retaken.

That rule will be in effect for the World Cup, which begins June 11 in South Africa.
