New Madrid won’t run in Belmont
NEW YORK — New Madrid is the latest horse to be pulled out of what has become a shrinking field for the Belmont Stakes.
In a tweet on Friday race officials announced that the Tim Ice-trained colt would not appear in the third leg of the Triple Crown on June 5. No reason was given.
New Madrid had one victory and one second-place finish in four lifetime starts, but he was a distant sixth last month in the Arkansas Derby.
The announcement came a day after D. Wayne Lukas decided Dublin would not run, meaning no horse will appear in all three Triple Crown races. Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver and Preakness winner Lookin At Lucky were previously pulled out of the Belmont.
