IndyCar Series is reviewing Indy 500 finish

INDIANAPOLIS — IndyCar Series officials were reviewing the finish of the Indy 500 on Sunday evening, more than two hours after Mike Conway crashed on Lap 199, bringing out a yellow flag and raising questions about who placed third.

Marco Andretti contends he slowed down because of a caution flag late in the Indianapolis 500. Alex Lloyd says Andretti slowed down because he was out of fuel.

The decision will not affect the top of scoreboard, with Dario Franchitti beating Dan Wheldon. But the order of finish for places three through six could change. The original results have Lloyd third, Scott Dixon fourth, Danica Patrick fifth and Andretti sixth.

Andretti’s father, Michael, said Marco was passed by three cars after the yellow flag came out.

Lloyd saw it differently.

“Basically, we came out of turn four to take the checkered and Marco was slowing down, he was really getting slow, so I realized he was clearly out of fuel,” Lloyd told The Associated Press. “It was clear from the driver’s meeting that if you can’t keep pace during a yellow, you have the right to keep pace and pass him.”

Lloyd’s team owner Dale Coyne said the team’s data showed that Lloyd have enough fuel to finish the race, and they believed Andretti did not.

After meeting with IndyCar officials, Coyne said he did not yet have a verdict on the finish.

“I don’t know yet,” Coyne said. “We’re going to look at our data and see what it says.”

Once results are posted as “official,” teams have 30 minutes to file a protest.

Neither team would say whether they intend to do so.

“I know we will see what data they have, and we’ll show them our data,” Coyne said. “We had fuel pressure all the way to the checkered flag, and I don’t think they did.”
