After 75: Netherlands leads Denmark 1-0

JOHANNESBURG — The Netherlands has a 1-0 lead over Denmark in a World Cup match after 75 minutes because of an own goal.

Denmark defender Simon Poulsen was trying to clear Robin van Persie’s cross when he headed the ball off the back of Daniel Agger and into the net in the 46th minute.

Rafael van der Vaart could have doubled the score in the 59th, but Denmark goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen stopped his volley. Sorensen was tested again in the 74th as he pushed Mark van Bommel’s shot to a corner.

The Netherlands controlled possession in the first half but the Danes came closest to scoring, with Netherlands goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg stopping shots from Thomas Kahlenberg and Dennis Rommedahl.

Striker Nicklas Bendtner headed Rommedahl’s cross just wide in the 27th.
