England, Algeria 0-0 after 1st half
CAPE TOWN, South Africa — England’s Frank Lampard wasted the best chance during a 0-0 first half between England and Algeria in their World Cup match.
The midfielder got the ball unuarded about 12 yards from goal after Algeria failed to clear Glen Johnson’s cross. But Lampard’s weak left-footed shot was saved nicely by goalkeeper M’bohi Rais Ouhed.
Gareth Barry and Steven Gerrard had long-range shots stopped.
Algeria surprisingly had much possession, with Karim Ziani and Hassen Yebda pulling the strings in midfield.
Ziani fired a shot wide in the 36th minute, while England goalkeeper David James looked shaky.
James replaced Robert Green after the goalkeeper’s blunder allowed the United States to earn a 1-1 draw in the teams’ opener last week.
