Spain leads Honduras 1-0 on Villa goal
JOHANNESBURG — David Villa scored in the 17th minute to give Spain a 1-0 lead against Honduras after 30 minutes of their Group G match Monday.
Villa broke into the penalty area from the left flank and beat three defenders before blasting a right-foot shot past goalkeeper Noel Valladares. It was Villa’s 39th goal for Spain, and his country’s first in the World Cup.
Villa hit the crossbar in the seventh minute with a long-distance shot. Moments earlier, attacking partner Fernando Torres tried to volley a low cross but was off-balance and didn’t connect well with the ball.
Honduras was pushed back deep into its own half and struggled to cross the halfway line at Ellis Park
Both teams lost their opening matches.
