Atwal moves up five places in Travelers golf

CROMWELL - India’s Arjun Atwal landed three birdies against two bogeys for a one-under 69 that saw him move five places up on the leaderboard at the end of the third round of the Travelers Championships golf here Saturday.

Atwal, three-under 207 for 54 holes, was tied 55th. He birdied the second, sixth and 14th holes and bogeyed the first tenth in his 69. His earlier rounds were 71 and 67.

Justin Rose came close to his second straight PGA TOUR victory by shooting a two-under 68 to take a three-stroke lead over Ben Curtis into the final round.

Rose, the 29-year-old Englishman who won the Memorial tournament, but then failed to qualify for the U.S. Open, had a 16-under 194 total at TPC River Highlands after setting the tournament 36-hole record with rounds of 64 and 62.

Curtis, the 2003 British Open champion, shot a 64. Vaughn Taylor (67) was 11 under, and Ricky Barnes (64), Scott McCarron (66), Brendon de Jonge (67), Bubba Watson (67), Matt Jones (68), Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin (69) and Bill Lunde (69) were 10 under.
