Germany leads England 2-1 at halftime

BLOEMFONTEIN, South Africa — Germany leads England 2-1 at halftime of their World Cup second-round match behind goals by Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski.

Klose outmuscled defender Matt Upson to a bouncing ball off a goal kick and shot past England goalkeeper David James in the 20th minute. Podolski then put the ball between James’ legs 12 minutes later to double the lead.

Upson pulled one back for England in the 37th, heading in a cross from Steven Gerrard.

Frank Lampard appeared to tied the score a minute later with a lob that hit the inside of the crossbar, bounced down and then out. Uruguay referee Jorge Larrionda motioned for play to continue.

TV replays showed the ball hitting the ground well behind the line.
