Oppong lifts Harrisburg past Red Bulls in OT

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Dominic Oppong scored in the 117th minute to lift the Harrisburg City Islanders to a 1-0 win against the New York Red Bulls on Tuesday night in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup.

Oppong’s unassisted goal from 15 yards out beat New York goalkeeper Greg Sutton to the far post. The closest either team came to scoring before that came in the 104th minute as Harrisburg’s Vince Petrasso hammered a shot off the right post from 18 yards out.

Harrisburg (4-6-4 in the United Soccer League) advanced to next week’s quarterfinals. The victory also was the Islanders’ third in three years in the U.S. Open Cup’s round of 16 against a team from Major League Soccer.

New York, 8-5-0 in MLS, opted to rest leading-scorer Juan Pablo Angel and top playmaker Joel Lindpere.
