Roberts 68 takes early lead at Senior Open
SAMMAMISH, Wash. — Loren Roberts is the early clubhouse leader in the first round of the U.S. Senior Open, taking advantage of cool morning conditions under overcast skies.
Roberts shot a 2-under 68 at Sahalee Country Club Thursday morning. Tom Lehman and Michael Allen were a shot back after 1-under 69s.
Hometown favorite Fred Couples’ roller-coaster round featured bogeys on three of four holes, followed by three consecutive birdies. He’s at even-par 70. Tom Watson, playing with Couples, also finished at 70, making bogeys on three of his final four after briefly holding the lead.
Bruce Vaughn was 4 under through 14 holes and amateur Tim Jackson was 2 under through 15.
Roberts methodically worked his way around the course, taking advantage of the few birdie holes and posting just one bogey. Roberts birdied the 14th and 16th on his first nine, then birdied the par-5 second hole, one of only two par 5s on the course.
