AP Interview: Rogge’s hopes for Youth Olympics

GENEVA — International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge hopes the inaugural Youth Olympic Games will teach young athletes to embrace fair play and reject doping, racism and corruption.

Rogge will declare the games open in Singapore on Saturday, fulfilling his longtime wish to create a global, multi-sport event for young athletes.

Rogge tells The Associated Press that the games will prepare athletes for their Olympic careers.

Around 3,600 athletes aged 14-18 will compete in the 26 summer Olympic sports over 13 days.

The athletes will attend educational workshops in the Olympic village.
