BCCI rejects Modi’s request for recusal of Jaitley, Amin

NEW DELHI - The Indian cricket board’s disciplinary committee Wednesday rejected the request of Lalit Modi, the suspended Indian Premier League chairman, for recusal of all the three members of the panel.

“The request of Mr. Lalit Modi for recusal of certain members of the Disciplinary Committee is rejected,” Board of Control for Cricket in India said in a statement Wendesday.

Modi had asked for recusal of IPL interim chairman Chirayu Amin, BCCI vice president Arun Jaitley and Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association chief Jyotiraditya Scindia, who formed the three-member disciplinary panel which is investigating the charges of financial irregularities.

“The next hearing of the disciplinary committee is fixed for Wednesday, August 18 at 7:30 p.m. at Hotel Taj Palace, Delhi,” the statement said.

Modi’s lawyer Mehmood Abidi called the BCCI’s decision “unfair”.

“It is unfair and against the principle of natural justice. We will decide our next course of action after consultation with senior counsel.”

“He had couple of reasons. With respect to Chirayu Amin, he is the interim chairman, so it is a matter of personal interest. And both Arun Jaitley and Jyotiraditya Scindia were party to the decisions taken by general body of BCCI (on IPL). All governing body members of BCCI were associated with the decision making process or the issues at stake in this matter, so they cannot be part of the committee.”

The committee has met three times so far and Modi has been represented by his lawyers.

Modi wanted Jaitley and Scindia out of the committee as both were members of the IPL governing council which was party to all the financial deals that are being probed.
