NEW YORK - Richard Williams, who finished watching his daughter Venus beat Italian Roberta Vinci, 6-4, 6-1, in the first round of the US Open, said it was good to be back at Flushing Meadows, twelve months after the Open had ended terribly for his family and for a Japanese lineswoman.

“Left a bad taste. Serena went too far. But I thought everybody did as well as they could. I’m glad the woman is here again,” Richard said while commenting on the foot fault call against Serena and the infamous tantrum that followed in 2009.

“Serena is doing terrible. She’s talking about coming back at the end of September (for the Pan Pacific Open), but I don’t think she should. She won’t be ready,” he told about her injury.

World No.1 is out with foot injury that has created a considerable amount of controversy. It is absurd to imagine that Serena would skip this major if she could play, the Daily News reports.

Meanwhile, Venus came out against Vinci and immediately hitting a 124-mph ace. “Yeah, here I am. A great way to start off,” Venus said of that first shot.

Richard is sad that Venus hasn’t won an Open title in nine years. She hasn’t won a major anywhere but Wimbledon in nine years. (ANI)
