Delhi’s Walled City to get a facelift ahead of Commonwealth Games

NEW DELHI - The Walled City and Subhash Marg in Daryaganj are all set to get a facelift ahead of next month’s XIXth Commonwealth Games.
Subhash Marg, which is an important link up to World Heritage Red Fort and is close to the Indira Gandhi Stadium, one of the venues of the Commonwealth Games to be held next month, will have new look before the event.
This was decided at a meeting presided over by Delhi Urban Development Minister Dr. A.K. Walia.
Municipal Corporation of Delhi Commissioner K.S. Mehra, Secretary, Shahjahanabad Development Board, Savitur Prasad, and representatives of various traders’ associations from Chandni Chowk and Daryaganj were present at the meeting.
So far, wires that were hanging on one side of Subhash Marg have been removed. The restoration of footpath on both sides is being taken up in full swing.
Dr. Walia instructed the civic agencies to take up similar work on Ansari Road.
The facelift of Daryaganj before the Games will help in presenting a better image of the old city.
As far as beautification of Chandni Chowk is concerned the Shahjahanabad Development Board has been asked to make serious efforts and take it as a challenge. The Walled City is of paramount importance as far as attraction of tourists is concerned.
MLA Sawhney apprised Walia about accumulation of water and sewage water around Hanuman Mandir, Yamuna Bazar, Ring Road, Anguri Bazar and Bela Road.
It was also informed that due to the developmental works carried out by various agencies like the Public Works Department, Municipal Corporation of Delhi and the Delhi Jal Board, the sewerage and drainage system of the area have been substantially damaged.
Dr. Walia directed the concerned agencies to restore the system within ten days.
Dr. Walia exhorted representatives of traders’ associations to make their markets clean, attractive and beautiful before the Games.
The concerned agencies have also been directed to render constructive cooperation in this direction. Traders’ have been asked to install uniform sign boards to ensure a better image of the city during the Games. By Rajesh Gaur (ANI)
