Aussie wrestler apologizes for rude gesture

NEW DELHI — An Australian wrestler has apologized after he was stripped of a silver medal for making a rude gesture to judges during a Commonwealth Games wrestling final.

Australian team spokesman John Gatfield says Hassene Fkiri “met with and apologized to his Indian opponent and officials.”

The official confirmed Wednesday that a written apology had also been sent.

Fkiri had raised his finger at officials after being disqualified Tuesday from the 96-kilogram Greco-Roman final. He also refused to shake hands with his opponent Anil Kumar, which led officials to strip him of the silver medal.

Australian officials have confined him to the village for the remainder of the games.
