LONDON - England manager Fabio Capello has said that his ace striker Wayne Rooney is in his best shape of the season, both mentally and physically.

Rooney has been under scrutiny over allegations about his private life and has struggled with a long-standing ankle injury.

He has performed well for England in their opening two Euro 2012 qualifying victories against Bulgaria and Switzerland.

Capello said that Rooney’s performance against Montenegro will be even better after discussuing the striker’s situation with Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson.

“I spoke with Sir Alex who told me, when I decided the squad, he’d be fit because the ankle problem was not so big,” The Sun quoted Capello, as saying.

“I spoke with Rooney too about about different things and I monitored him during training when he trained perfectly, really well without any pain. He’s focused on the game. He is happy and in a good moment,” he said.

England captain Rio Ferdinand also backed Capello’s views on Rooney.

“Wayne has been under immense pressure because of the reasons we know. He has been fantastic in training, the same old Wazza around the training ground, which we all love. If we are going to win anything, we need him playing at tip-top form,” Ferdinand said. (ANI)
