Mortimer vows to walk the plank if Black Caps crash

WELLINGTON/AHMEDABAD - Under fire Black Caps high-performance director Roger Mortimer has promised to walk the plank if the team continues to deliver poor results.

“I feel fully responsible for what happened in Bangladesh and if the results continue to go the way they do, I have to be the first person to lose my job - there’s no question about that,” Mortimer told Sunday News.

“I’m a massive advocate of being accountable. We’ve been given every flexibility by New Zealand Cricket, within reason, although we haven’t spent a huge amount of money on people. There’s been no lack of resources or pulling people in where required,” he added.

Since returning from Bangladesh, the Black Caps have been smashed from pillar to post for their disgraceful performances.

Some critics have also gone as far as suggesting members of the non-playing staff such as Mortimer are distractions the national side doesn’t need right now.

But the 38-year-old said: “My role is to make sure we are focused on performance and that is everyone is doing what they should be doing.” (ANI)
