Asian Games weightlifting: Indians fail to shine on opening day

GUANGZHOU - Indian weightlifters competing in the women’s 48kg and men’s 56kg category failed to win a medal on the opening day of the competition at the Asian Games here Thursday.
Soniya Chanu lifted a total weight 170 kg while Devi Atom managed 158kg to finish 5th and 6th, respectively, in the 48kg category event.
The gold medal went to Chinese Mingjuan Wang, who lifted 210 kg. Pensiri Laosirikul
(192 kg) of South Korea won the silver.
Srinivas Rao and Sukhen Dey also disappointed in the 56kg category.
Rao lifted a total weight of 245kg and finished 8th. Dey lifted 230 kg to place 10th out of the 15 contestants.
China came on top here as well with Jingbiao Wu bagging the gold for his brilliant effort (285kg). Kum Chol Cha of North Korea won the silver lifting 276kg.
