Asian Games volleyball: Indian men upset Japan, women down Maldives

GUANGZHOU - Indian men beat fancied Japan 3-2 while women put aside the Maldives 3-0 in the volleyball competition at the Asian Games here Friday.
The men, ranked 38th, played their best match of the tournament against World no. 14 Japan and won 25-20, 25-19, 21-25, 26-28, 15-13 in a group F 1-8 placement match.
The Indians, however, faltered on their way to the famous victory, letting Japan fight back after winning the first two sets. It was then a test of fitness and endurance levels of the two teams and the Indians came out on top.
Earlier, the women outlcasssed the Maldives with a 25-6, 25-7, 25-6 scoreline in a group A preliminary match at the Guangwai Gymnasium.
India play Qatar in the men’s event, while the women play Japan Saturday.
