Kenya Geoffrey Mutai wins Delhi Half Marathon

NEW DELHI - Kenya Geoffrey Mutai won the men’s elite category race in Airtel Delhi Half Marathon in 59:38secs while Ethiopia’s Aselefech Mergia won the women’s race on Sunday.
An estimated 30,000 Delhiites ran in the company of world-class athletes. he competitive part of the 21-km half marathon involved 8,680 Indian and foreign athletes.
The six-k.m. Great Delhi Run brought over 20,000 residents out on the streets, the 2.5-km wheelchair race saw 200 differently-abled and the four k.m. run race saw over a thousand senior citizens.
Thirty elite runners from overseas-including 12 Kenyans and eight Ethiopians-hit the road. Runners from six other nations were also there.
Ethiopian Deriba Merga, two-time defending champion, had to pull out of the race at the last moment and that had left the field open for the Kenyan athletes in the USD25,000 men’s half marathon. utai’s countryman Joel Kimurer won the Prague Half Marathon in March and was a strong contender here as well.
