NEW DELHI - Former Australian wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist will lead Kings XI Punjab in the fourth season of Indian Premier League (IPL) beginning Feb 19.
Gilchrist played for Deccan Chargers in the first three seasons and lead them to victory in 2009.
“I am excited to represent Kings XI Punjab, one of the most passionate and dynamic teams of the IPL. The role of a captain is a challenging one and I hope that I can live up to the expectations and trust that the KXIP management has shown in me,” Gilchrist said.
“We are looking forward to the same vociferous support from the fans and we promise a great game of cricket,” he said.
Newly-appointed Kings XI Punjab coach Michael Bevan said they wanted Gilchrist as captain and therefore picked him in the auction.
“Even if he is not at the peak of his career, I still feel as a leader he has a lot to offer. In Twenty20 cricket you are not asking the guy to strike at 120 in the opening position. You are asking for guys to strike at 140 or 150 and Gilly is the type of player who can turn in three or four match-winning performances over the season.”
“Gilchrist is an aggressive and attacking captain. He has got great leadership skills and has a lot to offer to the team both on and off the field,” said the former Australian batsman.
Commenting on Gilchrist’s appointment, Arvinder Singh, Kings XI Punjab Chief Operating Officer said the Australian is an asset to the team.
“We believe he is an excellent leader and a legend in his own right. He has the expertise and experience to lead Kings XI Punjab on the path of victory this year.”
