KARACHI - Pakistan’s left-handed pacer Sohail Tanvir was Wednesday ruled out of the Feb 19-April 2 World Cup owing to a knee injury.

Tanvir has been replaced by another left-arm paceman Junaid Khan, 21, who began playing the under-19 tournament with promising teenaged quick Mohammad Aamer, who last week was suspended by International Cricket Council (ICC) for five years over spot-fixing charges.

“The medical panel thinks that though the recovery was good, Tanvir still needs time to get fully fit before competing at international level,” the Pakistan Cricket Board said in a statement.

Khan has impressed with his bowling in the first class cricket, amassing 167 wickets in just 35 matches.

Tanveer returned to the Pakistan squad for the tour of New Zealand after recovering from a chronic knee injury, which kept him out of the national side for two years.

Pakistan play their first match of the World Cup Feb 23 against Kenya, while they face Bangladesh Feb 15 in a warm-up match in Mirpur.
