SYDNEY - Former Australian wicketkeeper Ian Healy reckons that veteran Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan’s stint with Cricket Australia’s Centre of Excellence would help the future generation of spinners in the country.
Muralitharan has agreed to sign on as a guest spin coach at the Brisbane-based centre in June this year.
“I think it’s great, as long as they aren’t throwing too much money at him” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Healy, as saying.
“It would be nice if he could identify some of our boys who could bowl like him - that would be a bonus,” he added.
Cricket Australia selector Greg Chappell has masterminded Muralitharan’s visit by using his extensive network of contacts in the Indian sub-continent.
According to reports, Muralitharan will not only impart the secrets of his spin wizardry, but also record a spin coaching tutorial so his extraordinary know how will be passed on to future generations of Australian spinners.
It maybe recalled that Muralitharan was repeatedly heckled, taunted and even had fruit thrown at him by unruly Australian fans here since being no-balled by Darrell Hair in the 1995 Boxing Day Test. (ANI)
