Krejza should be recalled for Ashes: Mark Waugh

SYDNEY - Former Australian cricketer Mark Waugh has said that the National Selection Panel (NSP) should recall off-spinner Jason Krejzad for the Ashes.

The spinner’s spot remains the most contentious as selectors prepare to unveil the Australian side tomorrow for the first Test.

Incumbent spinner Nathan Hauritz is not in the best of form, having returned figures of 0-74 in Victoria’s first innings of 378 during the week.

He, however, remains the favourite to get the nod should the Australians opt for a specialist spinner on what is expected to be a lively Gabba wicket.

Waugh has called for reactivation of the Tasmanian tweaker’s career.

“Australia’s first-choice spinner is a close call. If I’m picking a spinner to win me a Test and take five-for, then I still think Jason Krejza is the best option,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Waugh, as saying.

The 27-year-old, who has captured 13 Test wickets, including 12 in a match against India, has fallen behind Tigers teammate Xavier Doherty in the pecking order at state level.

Former Australian spinner Stuart MacGill believes that Marcus North’s part-timers are good enough to give him the spinning role, while Waugh’s Fox Sports cricket commentary colleagues Brendon Julian and Damien Fleming reckon Hauritz should be retained. (ANI)
