Patriots QB says Shriver set a great example
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady says former President John F. Kennedy’s sister Eunice Kennedy Shriver was a great woman who set a great example for people around the world.
Shriver started the Special Olympics in the 1960s. She died Tuesday at age 88.
Brady and some of his teammates have been involved for the past nine years with the Best Buddies program, headed by Shriver’s son. The initiative seeks to improve the lives of people with intellectual disabilities through one-to-one friendships.
Brady says he last saw Shriver in May, when he served as honorary chairman for a Cape Cod bike race that raised $3.6 million for Best Buddies. He says she appeared in great spirits at the time even though she had suffered a series of strokes in recent years.
