IOC set to start working in Rio on 2016 Olympics

LAUSANNE, Switzerland — The International Olympic Committee is sending an expert team to Rio de Janeiro this week to begin shaping the 2016 Olympic Games.

Olympic administrators and games delivery advisers will work with 300 sports and government officials to start detailed planning for the $14.4 billion event.

IOC team leader Gilbert Felli said Monday that a two-day seminar will pick up on perceived weak points in Rio’s bid proposals.

Security issues will be on the agenda after more than 40 people died in gun battles between police and drug gangs two weeks ago.

Rio won Olympic hosting rights by beating out Chicago, Madrid and Tokyo in an Oct. 2 vote of IOC members.
