Monroe scores 18 to lead No. 21 G’town to win

NEW ORLEANS — Greg Monroe returned home and finished with game-highs of 18 points and 11 rebounds, and No. 21 Georgetown defeated Tulane 74-58 on Friday night.

Monroe, who grew up across the Mississippi River from downtown New Orleans, had his own cheering section behind the bench to watch the Hoyas (1-0) use their superior size to wear down the Green Wave in the second half.

Georgetown outrebounded the Green Wave 36-24, and outscored them 42-31 in the second half.

Austin Freeman scored 16 points, Jason Clark had 13 and Chris Wright 11 for the Hoyas.

Kris Richard scored all but two of his team-high 15 points in the second half for Tulane (0-1). David Booker had 14 points, but scored just four in the second half.

Georgetown scored the first 11 points of the game, but led by just five at halftime. It scored the first seven points of the second half and never was threatened.
