Williams scores 19 to lead Memphis past Jackson St

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Elliot Williams scored 19 points, Will Coleman finished with 16, and Memphis won its first game since John Calipari left, beating Jackson State 82-53 Friday night to give coach Josh Pastner a winning debut.

Garrison Johnson led Jackson State with 16 points, while Grant Maxey finished with 11 points.

Memphis limited Jackson State to 37 percent shooting and forced 20 turnovers.

The Tigers went on a 17-1 run capped by a 3-pointer from Mack to put the game away in the second half.

Jackson State missed 13 of its first 15 shots, but Memphis didn’t do much better, allowing Jackson State to keep it close until the Tigers closed the first half with a 21-6 run that left them up 38-21 at the half.

Coleman led Memphis with 10 rebounds and Roburt Sallie had 7 to go with 7 points.
