AHMEDABAD - A record stand of well over 300 runs between Mahela Jayawarnede and Prasanna Jayawardene took Sri Lanka to a mammoth 708 for five in the first innings at lunch, in reply to India’s 426, on the fourth day of the first cricket Test here Thursday.
Mahela was batting on 267 and Prasanna 134, his second Test century, as Sri Lanka went into lunch with a huge lead of 282 runs at Motera’s Sardar Patel Stadium here.
Resuming at overnight score of 591 for five, Mahela and Prasanna added 117 runs in the morning session as their unbroken partnership of 333 runs became a sixth-wicket record for Sri Lanka.
Both Mahela and Prasanna drove and cut the fast bowlers for fours with ease as runs flowed quickly. The introduction of spinners didn’t slow down the proceedings as off-spinner Harbhajan Singh and leggie Amit Mishra failed to trouble the Sri Lankan batsmen.
