Walchhofer wins World Cup super-G

VAL D’ISERE, France — Michael Walchhofer of Austria won the World Cup super-G on Saturday, beating Ted Ligety of the United States.

The former downhill world champion posted the 15th win of his career on the icy and steep Face de Bellevarde course in a time of 1 minute, 20.78 seconds. Ligety was 0.28 seconds back to match his season’s best.

On a day of poor visibility, Italy’s Werner Heel finished third, 0.75 seconds behind.

Overall World Cup leader Carlo Janka of Switzerland, who fell in Friday’s super combined, skied out of the technically demanding course after only a few gates.

It was only the second super-G victory in the 34-year-old Walchhofer’s career.
