Wright leads Virginia past Samford

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Monica Wright scored 28 points and No. 23 Virginia beat Samford 69-60 in the opening round of the Cavalier Classic on Monday night.

Wright also had nine rebounds and six steals for the Cavaliers (8-3), who led 35-31 at halftime. Chelsea Shine and Simone Egwu had 10 points apiece.

Samford (8-5) made 13 of 31 3-point attempts, accounting for all but six of its field goals. Emily London went 5 for 9 from behind the arc and finished with 18 points. Monica Maxwell had three 3s and 14 points.

Wright has scored at least 20 points in three consecutive games and seven times this season. She went 10 for 18 from the field and 6 of 9 from the free-throw line.

Virginia will play Liberty in the championship game Tuesday night. Liberty beat Cornell 70-40 in the other first-round game.
