Santos Laguna wins blanks Atlante 3-0 in Interliga

CARSON, Calif. — Rodrigo Ruiz and Fredy Jose Bareiro scored in the second half to give UAG Estudiantes Tecos of Guadalajara a 3-3 tie with Mexico City’s Club America in the second game of a Group A double-header at the InterLiga tournament on Saturday night.

In the first game, Daniel Luduena scored two goals to lead Santos Laguna to a 3-0 victory over Atlante.

Club America and Estudiantes qualify for InterLiga’s double-header final Wednesday night. America won Group A while Estudiantes advanced on goal differential.

America held a 3-1 lead when Ruiz scored from six yards in the 53rd minute. Rubens Oscar Sambueza set up the goal by beating America’s Miguel Layun one-on-one before passing to an unmarked Ruiz.

Bareiro tied the score in the 65th minute on a 13-yard shot that Sambueza set up with a solo run on a counterattack.

Oswaldo Alanis put Estudiantes ahead in the second minute with a 6-yard header off Ruiz’s corner kick. But America scored three goals in nine minutes to take a 3-1 lead.

Angel Eduardo Reyna tied the score in the eighth minute with a 13-yard shot after a 60-yard run. Salvador Cabanas fired an 11-yard header in the 12th minute, then Adolfo Rosinei scored in the 17th minute after a give-and-go with Cabanas.

Against Atlante, Matias Vuoso also scored and Oswaldo Sanchez made five saves in Santos Laguna’s first victory of the tournament.

Vuoso broke a scoreless tie in the 52nd minute, then Luduena ran onto Vuoso’s pass and converted from seven yards in the 56th minute. Then in the 62nd minute, Luduena fired a 12-yard shot into the upper-right corner of the net.

Sanchez, who represented Mexico in three World Cups, made two big saves early. Sanchez deflected Fernando Navarro’s 18-yard chip off the crossbar before blocking Daniel Arreola’s 5-yard shot one minute later.

The competition determines two berths for Mexican teams in the Copa Libertadores, South America’s most prestigious club tournament.
