Togo disqualified from African Cup
CABINDA, Angola — The African soccer confederation says Togo has been “disqualified” from the African Cup of Nations.
The team withdrew after two people from its delegation died in an ambush shooting last week. Togo was to have played its opening game against Ghana on Monday in Group B.
Before the team returned home Sunday, Togo’s government had asked organizers to postpone the competition to give players a chance to mourn.
Confederation coordinator Yaouba Amoa tells The Associated Press that “the team is disqualified” and Togo’s group will now consist of three nations.
Ivory Coast plays Burkina Faso on Monday in Group B. Ghana plays Friday against Ivory Coast.
