MELBOURNE - Australian Open officials remained convinced Friday that US Open champion Juan Del Potro will front up for Monday’s start of the first major of the season despite withdrawing from the AAMI Classic tune-up event.

The Argentine world number four pulled out Thursday from the eight-man special event at Kooyong club, more as a precaution due to a wrist injury, Open boss Craig Tiley said.

“Del Potro decided to take a couple of days’ break,” Tiley told local radio. “He obviously wants to start 2010 well.”

Del Potro had been due to play a Kooyong semi-final Friday against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who automatically moved into the final with Spain’s Fernando Verdasco.
