Roger Federer reaches 4th round at Australian Open

MELBOURNE, Australia — Top-seeded Roger Federer has won his third-round match at the Australian Open, beating Spain’s Albert Montanes 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 for his 50th career victory at Melbourne Park.

The Swiss star looked sharp in his Saturday afternoon match at Rod Laver Arena, serving for the second set after breaking Montanes in the penultimate game, then breaking again to open the third set.

Federer has won three of his record 15 Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open and improved his record to 50-7 in Melbourne. One of those seven losses came in last year’s final to Rafael Nadal, the Spanish left-hander’s first Grand Slam title on hard courts.
