Ghana beats Nigeria 1-0 to reach African Cup final
LUANDA, Angola — Ghana has reached its first African Cup of Nations final in 18 years, defeating Nigeria 1-0.
Asamoah Gyan scored in the 21st minute. Nigeria could have tied it five minutes later after Martins connected with Odemwingie’s shot in the box only to see it saved by Richard Kingson.
Ghana, a World Cup qualifier, is playing in the African Cup final for the first time since 1992. Ghana will face the winner of Thursday’s later semifinal between Algeria and Egypt.
Nigeria dominated from the start and created a number of good chances but was unable to break down Ghana’s defense. Despite being deprived of many key members including Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien, Ghana’s inexperienced young players coped well with Nigeria’s attacks.
