Naranjeros win opener in Caribbean Series

MARGARITA ISLAND, Venezuela — Ruben Rivera hit a two-run triple and Mexican club Naranjeros de Hermosillo beat Venezuela’s Leones del Caracas 7-2 in the Caribbean Series on Tuesday.

Pablo Ortega allowed two runs and seven hits in five innings for Naranjeros de Hermosillo.

Leones del Escogido of the Dominican Republic also won, beating Puerto Rico’s Indios de Mayaguez 2-1 in the opening game of the series. Kevin Barker hit a go-ahead homer and Raul Valdes pitched six solid innings.

Leones del Escogido faces Naranjeros and Leones del Caracas plays Indios on Wednesday. The six-day, double-round robin tournament ends Saturday.
