Richard’s Kid wins San Antonio ‘Cap at Santa Anita
ARCADIA, Calif. — Richard’s Kid found room along the rail and rallied to win the $150,000 San Antonio Handicap by a head Sunday at Santa Anita.
Ridden by Garrett Gomez, Richard’s Kid covered 1 1-8 miles in 1:49.05 and paid $5.20, $3.40 and $3 as the 8-5 favorite. Dakota Phone returned $21.40 and $10.80, while Philatelist was another head back in third and paid $7.80 to show.
Richard’s Kid was last in a field of 11 turning for home in his first race since finishing sixth in the Breeders’ Cup Classic in November.
“I stayed down inside with him because there wasn’t a whole lot I could do about it,” Gomez said. “Nobody was really stopping today, so the only way we were going to overcome that was to save ground. He’s got a great kick.”
Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Furthest Land was fifth and Mast Track was sixth.
The victory, worth $90,000, increased Richard’s Kid’s career earnings to $891,370, with seven wins in 22 starts. He is set to run in the Dubai World Cup on March 27.
